Communication and collaboration platform for integrated landscape planning

Karelian landscapes of Finland and Russia are facing new challenges caused by globalization, climate change, and demands leading to more intensive use of natural resources, among others. These new challenges override local communities and institutions, cornering them into conflicts, temporary solutions and unsustainable practices.

Sustainable Karelian Landscapes (KARLANDS) project strives towards integrating landscape planning and monitoring, with a vision to bridge the use of natural resources (stone, metals, land, wood, animals and fish) with biodiversity maintenance and supporting sustainable recreational use of nature along the Finnish-Russian border. KARLANDS implementation approach is based on research and updating data, planning and using the results with stakeholders; making it public by extensive local, regional and state level activities. These activities have been planned to be an integral part of development of the Green Belt of Fennoscandia.

To achieve results in integrated landscape planning, a concept of communication and collaboration platform is considered vital. The platform is seen to raise awareness and gain understanding, involvement, action and support in landscape planning. The platform will also allow for development of an extensive co-operation and build continuity on the existing results involving strong organizations. The presentation gives a concise breakdown of how the platform is being developed and how it may impact on landscape planning and development.
